It’s been one hell of a year for the famed Nurburgring Norschleife circuit inGermany. The Green Hell, as Jackie Stewart called it, which is the proving ground for so many of the vehicles we aspire to ownin, has seen remarkable times this year from several dream machines. From the 8:04 set by the Alfa Romeo 4C, to the 7:08 set by the Nismo GT-R, to possibly the most crucial up until now, the 6:57 time set by the Porsche 918 Spyder. But now, the McLaren P1 has dared to challenge the sub-7 Porsche.
In a daring attempt, the McLaren P1 at the hands of one of its test drivers, Chris Goodwin, has set a time of… well, we don’t know. McLaren has refused to say what they achieved, but has said, “Did we achieve it (a time under 7 minutes)? Well, of course.” It is rumoured that it demolished the Porsches record and posted a 6 min 47 second time, but until McLaren change their mind and tell us, we’ll never quite know if the P1 has or hasn’t beaten the Porsche 918 Spyder. If the rumoured 6:47 time is true, it would make the McLaren P1 the fastest production, street legal vehicle to ever lap the Nordschleife’s 20.832Km, beating the 6:48 time set by the Radical SR8 LM in 2009.
The mind games from McLaren are driving us mad, but at least they’ve provided us with this video of the P1 around the Green Hell. Turn up the volume, let your jaw drop, and watch and listen in awe to what can only be described as something demonic – the McLaren P1:
